Overview

SIMILAN ISLANDS LOOK AFTER COVID LIKE 20 YEARS AGO
NEW RULE TO PROTECT NATIONAL PARK: ONLY 25 DIVERS per DIVE SITE

Listed as one of the ten best dive sites on the earth, the Similan Islands are the best diving Thailand has to offer.

Similan Islands National Park (since 1982) is an archipelago consisting of nine islands named Ko Bon, Ko Bayu, Ko Similan, Ko Payu, Ko Miang, Ko Payan, Ko Payang, and Ko Huyong. Recently, the park was expanded to include two remote islands named Ko Bon and Ko Tachai.

It has typically two different kinds of diving. East side diving consists of gently sloping coral reefs with sandy patches with the occasional boulder in-between. The west side is known for its huge underwater granite boulders with numerous swim-throughs.

The most important of all dive sites in the Similans is Richelieu Rock, famous for its incomparable variety and abundance of marine life. Whale shark sightings are common here. The Similans have the greatest diversity of marine life in Thailand.

CONDITIONS FOR DIVING

Conditions for diving are great year-round – with 20-30 meter visibility standard. According to the official website, the park is closed in the rainy season from 16 May-31 October yearly. These dates are subject to change.

BEST TIME OF THE YEAR FOR DIVING

Getting to Similan Islands and back is pretty dangerous during monsoons. Monsoons usually occur between May and October. Each year is a little different, but dive trips are available daily from November until Mid-May. The boat departs from Tablamu pier.

Transfer is not included in the price.

  • GLOW Elixir resort – 400 THB (5 mins. drive)
  • Loh Pared Bay area (Santhiya Resort & Spa, Blue Bay resort, Yao Yai Resort, Heimat Garden) – 700 THB roundtrip (20 mins. drive)
  • North of Koh Yao Yai (Koh Yao Yai Village, Hillside resort, Betterview Resort, Thiwson bungalow – 800 THB roundtrip (35 mins. drive)

Price of the transfer is always roundtrip and is per car. We split the costs, if there are more guests from the same area. Please send us resort name and your room number to arrange the transfer and pick up.

We recommend renting a motorbike to come to our office (250 THB/day). There is very little traffic on Koh Yao Yai and motorbike is also great way to explore the island.

Do I need an Open Water Diver (OWD) certification?

Yes, OWD certificate is required for all our diving trips with the exception of our SCUBA diving courses.
